Prometheus is a mythological figure, the fire-bringer. The titans, jealous of humans’ superior power, stole fire from Olympus and bestowed it upon mortals. They decided to punish mankind for this thievery by taking away the gift given them by Prometheus—the gift that kept them warm. Prometheus then gave man an equal fire in return for freedom from servitude to Zeus, who ruled Olympus with an iron fist. And so humanity found its first freedom—to burn bright and strong without fear of punishment or reprisal by Zeus himself. This tale has become a symbol of human aspiration against oppression and tyranny. Those who would be free in the face of adversity, risk everything in order to gain that freedom. But what does this mythological tale have to do with the medical profession in the 21st century? As this article will further explore, billions are spent every year on health care—much of which is devoted to research aimed at curing illnesses and prolonging human life. This, however, is an exercise in futility because doctors are unable to solve the greatest healthcare problem of our civilization—aging itself. Aging is a natural process, yet it is also man’s biggest healthcare challenge. We are in fact seeing an unprecedented demographic change, and this is having a terrible effect on the human condition—especially when one thinks about the large amounts of money we spend on healthcare. The answer to these problems is simple: age. But such a solution is not to be found in academia, and thus we must look elsewhere for an answer. The mythological tale of Prometheus gives us that answer—the power to remain young and strong through our own ability. Then there exists the fire aspect of these tales: the idea that fire was stolen from Olympus and given to mankind by Prometheus himself. This understanding of the medical profession helps us to understand why doctors must have access to both fire and water. As this essay will further explore, most people do not have the ability to burn bright and strong, but they can still have access to water. In other words, many people suffer from a lack of fire, but most people also suffer from a lack of water. The mythological tale of Prometheus shows us that we need water as well as fire—water is an essential part of any flame. This is why technology cannot save us from aging itself—it cannot save us from a lack of either fire or water. The existence of this mythological tale is extremely interesting given its origin in ancient Greece. It is the story of Prometheus—a mythological figure who stole fire from the heavens, giving it to mankind. This myth was used as a metaphor for science in the 19th century. Charles Darwin’s theories on evolution were only partially accepted, much due to his denial towards religion, but also because they violated many religious tenets. Darwin believed in what he called “descent with modification”—in other words, he believed that all life evolved through time and experience guided by natural selection. This theory was viewed as being against religion by many people at the time, including scientists themselves. cfa1e77820
